Lead Money ran out the winner of the Ilgan Sports Cup at Seoul Racecourse on Sunday, providing a first big race winner in Korea for jockey Antonio Da Silva.

Celebrations were muted, however, following the catastrophic injury suffered by favourite Sharp Kaylan, when leading the race on the final turn.
Sharp Kaylan was sent off as favourite for the 1 1⁄8 m Listed race, having run 2nd in the Minister’s Cup, the final leg of the Korean Triple Crown a month ago. Just as then, he was taken to the lead by jockey Lee Chul Kyung and seemed set fair make all the running until disaster struck just over three-furlongs out, the colt going down at the head of the field and was found to have shattered his sesamoid.
Despite prompt attention, sadly he couldn’t be saved. Jockey Lee escaped serious injury but was inconsolable at the loss of a horse he had partnered in eleven of his twelve outings and in whose training he had played a major role.
Lead Money, a four-year-old Exploit filly, subsequently took things up and race away to win by two-and-a-half lengths at odds of 12/1 over Nasca Prince and last year’s Oaks winner JejuiHaneul, who came home 2nd and 3rd.
The victory continued an excellent early summer for Antonio Da Silva, who rode three winners across the weekend, taking his total since the start of June to twenty-one. Meanwhile, fellow Brazilian rider Manoel Nunes bagged four including Woman Volt for Australian trainer Simon Foster in the final race on Saturday.
Japan’s Masa Tanaka was also in the winner’s circle for the first time in what is his second Korean stint, partnering Macha Bucha to victory in race 7 on Sunday.
Seoul’s feature Sunday class 1 handicap saw three of the track’s up and coming imports collide over 7 f. Ultimately it was OP Seven, who got the better of both Moonhak Chief and Winner Gold producing an impressive late burst to come from 7th at the furlong pole to win by a length and a half going away on the line.
A $25,000 yearling purchase, OP Seven was recording his fifth win on his eleventh career start.
