McEvoy doesn’t Miss a beat aboard Freelove

An astute ride by Kerrin McEvoy has delivered juvenile Miss Freelove her first win.

Filly Miss Freelove might have enjoyed the favours to win at Canterbury but trainer Peter Snowden is adamant the two-year-old has a bright future.

Given a beautifully judged ride by Kerrin Mcevoy, Miss Freelove ($2.60 fav) found the front and was able to slow the tempo mid-race before bounding further in front once she straightened for home, taking out the Ole Kirk @ Vinery Stud Handicap (1100m) by 2-1/4 lengths over Beechworth ($8.50).

"Watching the race, coming to the corner I thought, if she doesn't find something here we're in a little bit of trouble because she had such a soft lead," Snowden said.

"She quickened nicely and Kerrin rode her and rated her well and it was good to see her win the way she did."

Miss Freelove's victory followed a third at Warwick Farm on debut when she was beaten less than a length and McEvoy said she relished the heavy conditions on Wednesday.

"Last time she hit the front and wandered a little bit. She didn't really know how to flatten out," McEvoy said.

"But today she was much better in that regard and she did enjoy that ground."

Snowden will monitor how Miss Freelove comes through the race but believes the daughter of young stallion Tassort still has more to offer this campaign.

"I have always liked her. She is by a great stallion doing a great job, they just keep on improving," Snowden said.

"How far we go this prep will be decided by how she pulls up but I feel there is another good run in her. Where that will be I'm not quite sure, but she is definitely a horse to follow later on."

While Miss Freelove led, three-year-old Big Red Tequila came from last and made a sweeping run down the outside to win the Drinkwise Plate (1100m).

The filly had finished third on debut at Wyong but trainer Joe Pride felt she had excuses that day and didn't hesitate to step her up to midweek city grade.

"She was pretty unlucky (at Wyong). She made a meal of the start and got caught up but she got to the line really well so I wasn't afraid to bring her into town," Pride said.

"She may have been flattered a bit there by the wet track because I suspected she would get through She is a light filly who skips across the top of the ground quite effortlessly.

"But it was a good win and good start to her career."

Pride has no major plans for Big Red Tequlia but has been encouraged by what the daughter of Shamus Award has shown to date.

"It's a good result with the filly and I'm sure she is going places because she's got a lot of upside to her," he said.
