Andrew Gluyas has resisted the temptation to tinker with the headgear of Guru Warrior, despite the last-start wayward tendencies of the emerging middle distance galloper.
Guru Warrior is an odd-on favourite to make it three consecutive wins in a heat of the Skybeau Series over 1 1⁄4 m on Saturday and his trainer is confident he can continue his meteoric rise through the grades.
The gelding looked to be coasting with 2 f to go in a similar race last start but, when placed under pressure by jockey Jason Holder, veered sharply to the outside and took plenty of riding to correct his course.
Gluyas said he toyed with the idea of applying headgear or altering the horse's bit but has instead given the son of Saxon Warrior another opportunity to correct the behaviour of his own accord.
"We did consider gear but we decided against it and gave him the benefit of the doubt," Gluyas said.
"He does seem to travel so well in his races and we didn't want to upset that component of his racing.
"It's small on numbers again but hopefully there is that little bit more pressure or something for him to follow on Saturday.
"We think we can work through the grades with him."
Gluyas confirmed that last-start Gawler Cup winner Air Assault will next tackle the Listed John Letts Cup over 1 1⁄8 m on Tuesday, while stable pin-ups Watchme Win and Arugamama will chase feature wins at Flemington during Melbourne Cup week.
